Australia’s First State-Government Funded Satellite Marks a New Era in IoT and Climate Monitoring
August 17, 2024 marks a historic day for Australia’s space industry as the country’s first state-government funded satellite, Kanyini, successfully launched into orbit. This achievement is the result of innovation and collaboration between Myriota, SmartSat CRC, and Inovor Technologies.
Kanyini’s mission is to deliver critical space data to government agencies and research institutions, with key focus on sustainability and climate change. The satellite is poised to detect early bushfires from space at speeds 500 times faster than existing conventional methods, which will be a vital tool for mitigating fire risks.
The South Australian Department for Environment in the state will benefit from the program. Kanyini aims to monitor urban heat islands, delivering critical data and assisting Greening Adelaide to better understand and address heat distributions in cities.
The satellite’s data will contribute to the development of artificial intelligence models, improving the accuracy of forecasts of natural calamities such as flooding and landslides. These collaborative efforts are backed by Queensland University of Technology and the European Space Agency’s Phi-Lab, enhancing disaster preparedness and response efforts.
Upon first contact with Kanyini (August 19), the satellite is already surpassing industry standards. Steady communications, flawless command and data handling since the launch have been successfully established.
Kanyini is more than just an Earth Observation satellite—it’s a testimony to the flourishing and innovative Australian space industry. By pushing the limits of earth observation, Kanyini is laying the groundwork for a sustainable and innovative space sector.
Kanyini will propel Myriota’s journey to expand IoT at a global scale, delivering a crucial role in supplying essential field data across various key industries. As we move forward together, we are set out on a mission to provide valuable insights to drive progress and advance data-monitoring capabilities for our partners and customers.
